The cultural environment, the socio-geographical climate but also other factors intervene daily in our physical and mental health without even realizing it. Sometimes we pass by some plants without even seeing or paying attention to them, but some of these are a true nutritional and medicinal treasure.
One of these plants are Red Malabar Spinach or Basella Rubra Lin.
Some years ago, I didn’t even know that this plant existed, but after I used it to treat medical problems and introduced it to my family’s diet, I got to grow it and become a “fan” of this plant.
Due to its low caloric content, Malabar red leaves are an extraordinary source of nutrients for vegetarians, but also for those who choose a healthy lifestyle.
Fruits, leaves and stems contain vitamins niacin, ascorbic acid, tocopherols, but also minerals such as Iron, Zinc, Copper, Sodium, Potassium, Magnesium, and Calcium.
Also, this plant contains phenolics, Flavonoids, Alkaloids, Saponins, Tannins, Carotenoids, Terpenoids.
Malabar spinach red fruits, , called alugbati, have powerful calming and disinfectant effects.
Betalains pigment from these fruits, otherwise used as a food dye, has a lot of health benefits.
For the first time, I used it for skin infections and allergies, for myself but also for my children of different ages. Fruit juice applied to the wound or skin allergy, quickly helps to relieve pain, itching, but also disinfects and accelerates wound healing. The antimicrobial better inhibition against gram-negative bacteria compared to gram-positive bacteria.
Basella plant has antimicrobial activity against Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus flavus, Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus.
Properties to inhibit the Klebsiella pneumonia and antimicrobial activity are dose dependent. An old traditionally remedy was to blend few leaves of red Malabar with sweetener and a glass of water but like a “slime” taste of that drink make my family refuse it.
So, I add the leaves on salads and other dishes, in this way I get adding on my family diet a new source of nutrients but also, a new natural medicine source what contributes to our health and wellness.
